The Dandenong Club came oh so close to capturing a second consecutive Ultimate Bowls Championship at the Deer Park Club on Friday night, finishing the Final 11-points adrift of The Point, who won their first title.
With nine wins from 11 matches over two-days, the Dandenong Club were one of the most dominant combinations during all the preliminary rounds heading into Friday night’s decider and were the favourites to take back-to-back trophies as the tournament progressed.
Former Australian representative Wayne Turley did much of the heavy-lifting with Gary Kelly throughout day two to help qualify for the play-offs, with Barrie Lester and Kelly the chosen pair to spearhead the team through to the final match.
Among those soaking up the atmosphere rinkside were our President Charlie Daly & General Manager Ross Dunlop.
The new fast and fresh format of bowls was a hit with the large crowds that turned up to watch the 24-franchises, with some of the biggest names in world bowls, in action..
The three-bowl pairs event (each team had three players with only two permitted to play in any one game)  introduced a brand new, and much welcomed, dynamic scoring format where multiple points could be scored with every bowl put down. Each end presented a minimum of 18 points being available for having the three closest shots (10-5-3) with additional points with 3 points on offer for every toucher and 3 points for the shot bowl after the leads completed their three deliveries.
With two events now completed in the inaugural staging of the Ultimate Bowls Challenge, the Dandenong Club has a win and a second-place to their credit as preparations now begin in earnest for a successful tilt at the final event scheduled for December 12 & 13 at the Moama Bowling Club.
Before that, the Dandenong Club will compete in Bowls Australia’s Bowls Premier League for the first time. The BPL will be held at Club Pine Rivers in Brisbane from November 12 to 15. The Dandenong Club will be represented by Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester & Natasha Scott..
Thanks to everyone who came out to Deer Park or watched our matches on the livestream. We appreciate your support.
