Mark your calendars for an extraordinary training session on Thursday, January 25, featuring three bowling legends. We are thrilled to welcome Australian representatives Barrie Lester and Corey Wedlock and Northern Ireland’s bowling sensation Gary Kelly.

Barrie and Gary have been part of the Club’s BPL team, Melbourne Pulse, where they team up with Goulburn-based Jackaroo Ellen Ryan to take on Australia’s very best teams in the short format of the game.

Corey is part of the highly successful Tweed Heads Ospreys, winners of the most recent BPL event held in November 2023

What to Expect:

Witness these international superstars in action as they actively participate in our club drills with Dandenong Club’s bowlers at a 5.30pm training session on Thursday 25th January. Get ready to receive tips and have your questions answered by Barrie, Corey, and Gary. The on-green activities will be followed by a BBQ at 7:00 pm. Stick around for an off-the-green session led by Barrie, featuring interviews with Corey and Gary and an open forum.

Between them, Barrie Lester, Corey Wedlock, and Gary Kelly boast an outstanding Commonwealth Games medals record and six BPL titles over the past five years. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from the best in the game.

Australia Day Fours:

The excitement doesn’t end there! The trio will also participate in The Australia Day Fours the following day, teaming up for matches that promise to keep you on the edge of your seat. Gary and Corey combine with Dandenong Club’s Will Sciberras and Clark Wilson. Barrie joins Jarryd Davies, who will have Scott Guymer and Nick Poda with them.

About Barrie

World Championship

In 2016, he was part of the triples team with Aron Sherriff and Mark Casey, who won the silver medal at the 2016 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Christchurch and another silver medal in the fours.

He was selected for the 2020 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Australia.

Commonwealth Games

Lester won a bronze medal in the pairs with Nathan Rice at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Further success came as part of the Australian team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland, where he won two silver medals in the Triples and the Fours.

In 2022, he competed in the men’s triples and fours at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Lester Carl Healey and Ben Twist won the silver medal.

Asia Pacific

Lester won double gold at the 2019 Asia Pacific Bowls Championships in the Gold Coast, Queensland.

Other

In 2012, he won the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic singles title. At a national level, he has won one Australian National Bowls Championship title and two Australian Opens.[13]

About Gary Kelly

Gary Kelly (born May 10 1989) is an Australian-based Northern Irish international indoor and lawn bowler.

Bowls career

Outdoors

He won a bronze medal in the Men’s singles at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2011, he won the pairs silver medal at the Atlantic Bowls Championships, and in 2015, he won the pairs gold medal at the Atlantic Bowls Championships.

He won a silver medal for a combined Irish team with bowls pairs partner Ian McClure in the pairs at the 2016 World Outdoor Bowls Championship.

2018 he was selected as part of the Northern Ireland team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Queensland. 2020, he was chosen for the 2020 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Australia, but the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to his international successes, he won the 2007 Irish National Bowls Championship singles.

Kelly moved to Australia after the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won the delayed 2020 Australian triples title with Corey Wedlock and Brendan Aquilina at the Australian National Bowls Championships. In 2022, he competed in the men’s singles and the men’s triples at the 2022

Commonwealth Games.

Later, in 2022, he won his first title at the Australian Open and the singles and triples at the European Bowls Championships.

In 2023, he was selected as part of the team to represent Ireland at the 2023 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. He participated in the men’s singles and the men’s pairs events. In the pairs with Adam McKeown, they topped their group before winning the gold medal, defeating Australia in the final. One week later, he won the silver medal in the singles after losing the final to Ryan Bester.

Indoors

His first significant indoor success came in 2019 after he defeated Brendan Aquilina in the final of the World Cup Singles.

He was part of the Dandenong Club trio that won the inaugural Ultimate Bowls Championship in April 2019, winning AUD 60,000 in prize money.

About Corey Wedlock:

Corey made his international debut in 2017 and has twice won the pairs with Nathan Pedersen at the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic in 2015 and 2016.

2020, he was selected for the 2020 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Australia, but the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, Wedlock won the delayed triples title with Gary Kelly and Brendan Aquilina at the delayed Australian National Bowls Championships. The following day, he won the fours title with Aquilina, Jamie Turner and Aaron Teys.

In 2022, he competed in the men’s pairs and the men’s fours at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

In 2023, he won his first Australian Open and then was selected as part of the team to represent Australia at the 2023 World Outdoor Bowls Championship.[8] He participated in the men’s triples and the men’s fours events. They won the gold medal in the triples with Aron Sherriff and Carl Healey. In the fours partnering with Aaron Teys, Healey and Sherriff, the team won their group before reaching the final against Scotland, where he won a second gold medal, winning 12–10 to complete a successful championships.
