Day 11 was always going to be tough.
Shane Carter and Matt Arnold, after a brilliant effort to reach the final 16 of the men’s pairs, found themselves up against one of Australia’s very best in Barrie Lester and Bundoora’s Ben Hube
r. Ultimately, the Lester/Huber combination was a little too strong on the day and came away with the 15-8 win. But for our pair, what an effort! It took six wins to get to that final 16, and to go that deep in a tournament of this standing is such a credit to them both.
We also had two of the Club’s women players to support: Annette McCormack and our 2024 recruit, Sammy Atkinson. The day started with 64 pairs remaining after the qualifiers. In round one, both pairs managed wins before Annette and her partner Sophie Jing were knocked out in the round of 32. Sammy was more fortunate when she and partner Selina Goddard secured a 27 -4 victory
The round of 16 featured several blockbuster contests, including Australian legends Lynsey Clarke and Kelsey Cottrell versus the Goddard/ Atkinson pair. In the end, Clarke/Cottrell prevailed, but it was not the result we had hoped for.
Sammy and Annette can be justly proud of their tournaments, where they each went deep into the fours, pairs and singles.
Ellen Fife continues into Day 12 and has reached the semi-finals in the women’s pairs.
Gary Kelly, Sean Ingham and Barrie Lester ended their run in the men’s event.

Still Going strong:
The over 60’s kicked off on Day 11 with qualifying rounds, where we had Mark Petty teamed up with Craig Bryant from Heathmont and Michael Poda partnering with David Bewley. Each had successful days and progressed to the knockout rounds on Day 12. Mark is at Tugun, and Michael is at Southport
