Electric Premier Bowls Finals:
The Dandenong Club, “the home of the Melbourne Pennant Grand Final”, was buzzing on Sunday 10th, March for two high-stakes showdowns. On a day when near 36-degree temperatures threatened play, the roof above the green provided welcome relief for players and spectators alike. The DC dome was abuzz with excitement, and the bowls lived up to expectations.
Beginning at 10.00 am, Essendon was looking to return to Premier One and was up against perennial challenges Whittelsea. After breaking away from what appeared to be a comfortable lead, Essendon clawed their way back into the match and, ultimately, the title of champions and the right to return to Premier One next summer.
But as good as that matchup seemed, the night-time show between Moonee Valley and Deer Park brought the Dandenong Club alive. Moonee Valley arrived with a three/nil record across the season; Deer Park brought their A-game. A large and boisterous crowd was in full swing. Aron Sherriff’s rink took on Queenslander Kane Nelson. Both were outstanding, and the quality of the play was best described as fearless. But it was Sheriff’s Rink who, at the 13th, 14th and 15th ends, grabbed 3, 5 and 5 shot wins to take charge and was never headed.
Across the green were outstanding matchups: Dylan Fisher’s rink played Jay Bye-Norris. “Jay Bye” had an early advantage that the relentless Fisher reeled back. Nathan Lynch could never get hold of Matt Baus, while Matt O’Brien and Ryan Tainton fought out a see-sawing draw.
In the end, Deer Park prevailed for back-to-back victories 83 to 58
It was the fifth year running that the Dandenong Club hosted the Premier final. The green played superbly, the surroundings were first-class, and the atmosphere was electric.
