Day 7 and 8 Results
Friday was day seven at the Australian Open, and the fields began to thin dramatically as we began the knockout rounds. It’s fours day, the women kick off their qualifiers, and the men their knockouts.
The women
The teams of Nics McKenzie, Trish Callinan, Tris Doolan, and Samantha Atkinson have secured three solid wins and are 45 shots up. This is a great start and sets them up nicely for the knockouts on Monday. Three wins on Monday will result in a spot in the quarter-finals.
Annette McCormack’s team managed just the one win and tumbled out. She is now finished for the Championship after some stellar performances in singles, pairs and fours.
For the Pulse, Ellen Fife’s team had a solid day and moved to the knockout.
The men
We had two teams of men’s fours in the knockouts. The team of Rob Wilson, Anthony Lee, Radar and Kris Paine went down 12-14 in the first of the knockout rounds. Wombat, Shane Carter, Matty Arnold and Scotty Guymer snagged a win in the first round but were down just one shot in their second match.
For Sean Ingham and Gary Kelly, it was three straight wins and through to the final 16.
Saturday
Both the men and women were playing singles knockouts
Samantha Atkinson had the toughest of draws. She played a great match to win first-up against Jackaroo Kristina Kristic narrowly but fell in the second round to New Zealand’s Katlyn Inch by just a single shot.
For Nics McKenzie, there were two knockout wins leading to her round of 32 match with Kelsey Cottrell, where she was defeated 21 to 15.
In the men’s singles, Dandenong Club members Matt Arnold, Wombat, Mark Petty, Kris Paine, Paul Meyers, Jarryd Davies, and Brenton McKenzie all reached the knockout stages. At the end of Saturday, 64 players remained on the field. Matt Arnold and Mark Petty managed the three wins required to go through and will be back in the green on Sunday, looking to reach the quarter-finals.
To end their singles campaign, Jarryd Davies secured two wins and a one-shot loss. Wombat and Kris Paine secured a win each.
